Deel, a +$12B valuation global payroll platform, faced challenges in its recruitment process due to a massive volume of applications and ineffective take-home assessments. A large percentage of candidates relied on AI to complete these assessments, leading to wasted time and resources. By partnering with micro1, Deel implemented an AI Interviewer that massively improved their interview pass rate and made cheating easily identifiable. This change not only streamlined their hiring process but also reduced recruitment costs by over 80%.

While receiving a significant number of inbound job applications may seem beneficial, it actually leads to wasted time and excessive costs for the recruitment and talent acquisition department if not handled properly. Before partnering with micro1, Deel used a static take-home test to assess candidates before advancing them to human interviews. According to Alan Price, Head of Talent at Deel, “the take-home tests had an 85% rate of candidates using AI to complete the exercise.” Thus, not only were these tests themselves a waste of time, but substantial internal resources were also wasted trying to manually review incredible assessments.
Furthermore, the goal of the take-home test was to eliminate unqualified candidates before they reached the recruitment managers, yet the human interview pass rate was disappointingly low compared to the improvements seen with the micro1 AI Interviewer.
Resumes alone do not provide enough information to decide whether to interview a candidate, highlighting the need for additional assessments before advancing candidates in the hiring process. Deel's original take-home tests were ineffective for this purpose, but the micro1 AI Interviewer has successfully addressed these shortcomings.
Firstly, the AI Interviewer includes a “Trust Score” in the post-interview report, which is based on screen sharing data, tab movements, and eye movements. This effectively mitigates cheating and helps Deel eliminate candidates from their pool. Their rate of candidates using AI to complete the exercise dropped from 85% to 0%.
When paired with unique AI interviews that assess skill-specific competencies and evaluate global candidates' English skills, Deel was able to significantly improve their human interview pass rate from 10% to 50% (a 5x increase). This ultimately saved their talent department a substantial amount of time and money, allowing staff to focus on higher-value tasks rather than interviewing unqualified or dishonest candidates.
As a major advantage, candidates also preferred the AI interviews over take-home tests, resulting in an improvement of over 80 in NPS for candidate experience. Within their first month of using the AI Interviewer, Deel hired more than 30 customer support representatives and 2 engineers, saving over 80% on recruitment costs. From here, they plan to expand to several other roles and we're so excited to see the numbers
